Celebrated each 13 October, the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction promotes a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster risk reduction by celebrating how people around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters.
This year’s theme is based on Target E of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030: “Substantially increase the number of countries with national and local disaster risk reduction strategies by 2020”.

On this occasion, UNESCO is organising a virtual Information Session to its Member States and Associate Members.

During this event, a video introducing the UNESCO’s contributions to Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) will be streamed for the first time and UNESCO’s activities will be presented. With this event, UNESCO aims to inform the Members States on the various programmes and activities implemented by all Sectors that contribute to build the capacities of Members States in climate and disaster risk management. These different activities all contribute to achieve the targets outlined in the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 and the 2030 SDGs.

Chaired by Ms Shamila Nair-Bedouelle, Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences, this Information Session will conclude with an interactive question and answer session, to give representatives of Members States the opportunity to ask questions but also to share their experience and their inputs on UNESCO’s approach to assisting Member States in Disaster Risk Reduction.
