E’ stata inaugurata venerdì 25 settembre ad Aquileia l’innovativo progetto di valorizzazione e ricostruzione degli ambienti della Domus di Tito Macro LEGGI LA SCHEDA >>, promosso dalla Fondazione Aquileia, presieduta dall’Ambasciatore Antonio Zanardi Landi. L’intervento è stato finanziato con un importo di sei milioni di euro, attraverso l’utilizzo delle risorse erogate alla Fondazione dalla Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia e mediante il contributo di ALES S.p.A., società in house del MiBACT.
L’articolato progetto di valorizzazione, ideato per assicurare la conservazione dei reperti esistenti e garantire la più ampia fruibilità del sito, ha previsto la risistemazione dell’area in seguito a un’importante attività di scavo condotta dall’Università di Padova, nonché la costruzione di un’elegante e moderna copertura in laterizio monocromo – tra le più ampie esistenti in Europa all’interno di un’area archeologica – sostenuta da pilastri d’acciaio in rosso pompeiano. La costruzione consente al pubblico di entrare concretamente in un’antica dimora romana e di comprenderne in maniera più immediata l’articolazione, le volumetrie, i percorsi, le fonti di illuminazione e il rapporto fra le sale principali e le aree scoperte. Sono state inoltre effettuate operazioni di pulitura, consolidamento, risarcimento di lacune e protezione finale su una superfice di 320 mq di pavimenti decorati con mosaici – la cui fase visibile è databile tra la fine del I° secolo a.C e la metà del I° d.C.
La visita sarà prossimamente arricchita con un allestimento multimediale, attento agli aspetti didattici, che permetterà di ricostruire le caratteristiche degli ambienti e delle pavimentazioni attraverso l’utilizzo delle più moderne tecnologie.
“La valorizzazione della Domus di Tito Macro rappresenta un punto importante di un percorso che la Fondazione Aquileia segue da tempo, allo scopo di raggiungere una migliore fruibilità dei resti della grande città romana. L’obiettivo è rendere ‘parlanti’ i reperti archeologici e le grandi opere d’arte conservate ad Aquileia, aiutando la comprensione nel contesto originalissimo di una città che fu punto d’incontro della romanità con il mondo balcanico e con quello nordafricano e mediorientale. Confidiamo che la Domus di Tito Macro possa richiamare ulteriormente l’attenzione del pubblico, unendosi così ad altri due grandi edifici costruiti dalla Fondazione, l’Aula Meridionale e la Domus Episcopale, che attraggono ogni anno 60.000 visitatori ciascuno” ha dichiarato l’Ambasciatore Antonio Zanardi Landi, Presidente della Fondazione Aquileia.
“Abbiamo sostenuto con decisione questo importante progetto, perché conferma la capacità dell’Italia di essere leader nella valorizzazione dei beni culturali. Con la ricostruzione dei volumi della Domus di Tito Macro il visitatore avrà modo di immergersi in modo ancora più coinvolgente nella realtà del tempo e coglierne al meglio le caratteristiche. Ales conferma così il suo impegno a supporto del MiBACT per la realizzazione di progetti volti alla valorizzazione e al miglioramento delle condizioni di fruibilità del patrimonio del Paese” ha dichiarato Mario De Simoni, Presidente e AD di Ales S.p.A.
“Si tratta di un’impresa particolarmente lunga e complessa ma anche appassionante, frutto di un lavoro corale, di riflessioni, discussioni e scelte non banali, mirate a trovare un equilibrio tra tutela, restauro e ricostruzione filologica, leggibilità e godibilità. Il risultato consente di apprezzare in modo nuovo i resti archeologici, restituendo loro atmosfere, luci e volumi” ha dichiarato Simonetta Bonomi, Soprintendente Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio del Friuli Venezia Giulia.
“La valorizzazione della Domus di Tito Macro ha rappresentato per la Fondazione, e certo rappresenterà anche in futuro, una sfida costante e appassionante nel coniugare la realtà dei resti archeologici con la loro ‘narrazione’, sia sotto il profilo delle scelte architettoniche adottate per la copertura e per la restituzione delle antiche strutture, sia sotto il profilo del racconto, o meglio dei racconti, che la domus, le sue trasformazioni, la vita al suo interno, il rapporto con la città antica possono ispirare. Tengo a ringraziare di cuore il personale della Fondazione, i tecnici, i professionisti e le imprese che hanno collaborato con noi per giungere a questo risultato” ha dichiarato Cristiano Tiussi, Direttore della Fondazione Aquileia.
Il progetto di ricostruzione è stato redatto dal Raggruppamento Temporaneo di Professionisti, coordinato dall’arch. Eugenio Vassallo e realizzato sotto la sorveglianza della Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio del Friuli-Venezia Giulia, con la direzione dei lavori dell’ing. Ermanno Simonati.
La Domus è stata visitabile in occasione delle Giornate Europee del Patrimonio e, a seguire, sarà aperta al pubblico su prenotazione, in base a modalità che saranno comunicate prossimamente sul sito internet www.fondazioneaquileia.it
On Friday 25th of September at 4.00 pm in Aquileia, the innovative project for the enhancement and reconstruction of the rooms of Tito Macro’s Domus has been inaugurated DISCOVER MORE >>, promoted by the Aquileia Foundation, chaired by Ambassador Antonio Zanardi Landi. The project was financed with six million euros, through the use of resources provided to the Foundation by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and the contribution of ALES S.p.A., MiBACT’s in house company.
The comprehensive valorisation project, designed to ensure the conservation of the existing archaeological finds and guarantee the widest possible accessibility of the site, has provided for the reorganization of the area following an important excavation activity carried out by the University of Padua, as well as the construction of an elegant and modern monochrome brick roof – one of the largest in Europe within an archaeological area – supported by Pompeian red steel pillars. The construction allows the public to concretely enter an ancient Roman residence and to understand more immediately its articulation, volumes, paths, lighting sources and the relationship between the main rooms and the open areas. In addition, cleaning, consolidation, compensation of gaps and final protection activities were carried out on a 320 sq. m. surface of floors decorated with mosaics – which can be dated between the end of the 1st century B.C. and the middle of the 1st century A.D..
The visit will soon be enriched with a multimedia installation, focused on the educational aspects, which will allow to reconstruct the rooms’ characteristics and floors through the employment of the most modern technologies.
“The valorisation of Tito Macro’s Domus represents an important milestone in a path that the Aquileia Foundation has been following for some time, with the aim of achieving better accessibility to the remains of the great Roman city. The aim is to make the archaeological finds and the great works of art preserved in Aquileia more ”talking”, helping the understanding in the very original context of a city that was a meeting point of Romanity with the Balkan and North African and Middle Eastern worlds. We are confident that Tito Macro’s Domus can further draw the public’s attention, joining two other great buildings built by the Foundation, the Aula Meridionale and the Domus Episcopale, which attract 60,000 visitors every year,” declared Ambassador Antonio Zanardi Landi, President of the Aquileia Foundation.

With the reconstruction of the volumes of Tito Macro’s Domus, visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the reality of the time in an even more engaging way and grasp its characteristics. Ales thus confirms its commitment to support MiBACT in the implementation of projects aimed at enhancing and improving the conditions of accessibility to the country’s heritage,” said Mario De Simoni, Chairman and CEO of Ales S.p.A.
“It is a particularly long and complex but also exciting project, the result of choral work, reflections, discussions and non-trivial choices, aimed at finding a balance between protection, restoration and philological reconstruction, readability and enjoyment. The result allows us to appreciate the archaeological finds in a new way, giving them back atmospheres, lights and volumes” said Simonetta Bonomi, Superintendent of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
“The valorisation of Tito Macro’s Domus has represented for the Foundation, and will certainly continue to do so in the future, a constant and exciting challenge in combining the reality of the archaeological remains with their ‘narration’, both from the point of view of the architectural choices adopted for the roofing and for the restitution of the ancient structures, and from the point of view of the story, or rather the tales, that the domus, its transformations, the life inside it, the relationship with the ancient city can inspire. I would like to sincerely thank the Foundation’s staff, technicians, professionals and companies who have worked with us to achieve this result,” said Cristiano Tiussi, Director of the Aquileia Foundation.
The reconstruction project was drawn up by a Professional team, coordinated by the architect Eugenio Vassallo and carried out under the supervision of Superintendence of Fine Arts and Landscape Archaeology of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, with the supervision of engineer Ermanno Simonati.
The Domus can be visited on the occasion of the European Heritage Days and, afterwards, it will be open to the public by appointment, according to the procedures that will be communicated in the near future on the website www.fondazioneaquileia.it.
