La XV sessione del Comitato intergovernativo per la salvaguardia del Patrimonio culturale intangibile dell’UNESCO, riunitasi oggi in web conference, ha ufficialmente inserito L’Arte delle perle di vetro nella Lista Rappresentativa del patrimonio culturale immateriale dell’Umanità.
La candidatura è stata depositata da Italia e Francia, con l’Italia capofila, e proposta per la parte Italiana dalla Comunità dei perlai veneziani rappresentati dal Comitato per la Salvaguardia dell’Arte delle perle di Vetro Veneziane e per la parte francese dalla Comunità dei perlai francesi, rappresentati dall’Association des Perliers d’art de France. Durante l’intero percorso, i lavori sono stati coordinati dai Ministeri per la cultura dei rispettivi Paesi.
“La comunità di detentori di cui sono portavoce è felicissima per il raggiungimento di questo risultato; un percorso costruito, passo dopo passo, in cui ha sempre creduto. – ha affermato la Presidente Comitato per la Salvaguardia dell’Arte delle Perle di Vetro Veneziane, Cristina Bedin – Nel territorio veneziano, l’arte delle perle di vetro accompagna la nostra vita e, in molte famiglie, c’è una perlera, un perler, un’impiraressa, un molatore o un maestro del vetro. I loro gesti, i ricordi, il linguaggio particolare, spesso legato al cucito e alla cucina, i luoghi dedicati all’arte delle perle di vetro impregnano la quotidianità di tutta la società veneziana. Ci auguriamo che questa iscrizione sia un segnale di speranza, di rinascita e di fiducia per il futuro della Città e delle sue Arti”.
L’arte delle perle di vetro è strettamente legata alla ricchezza delle conoscenze e alla padronanza di una materia, il vetro, e di un elemento, il fuoco. Quest’arte riunisce saperi condivisi e tecniche incorporate, rinvia a procedimenti e a strumenti artigianali particolari e include diverse fasi di lavorazione. La candidatura si focalizza sul saper-fare, sulle implicazioni sociali e culturali di quest’arte e non solamente sull’oggetto creato.
Il dossier, redatto con la costante partecipazione delle comunità di detentori, ha evidenziato le diverse lavorazioni: perle a “lume” (avvolgimento di vetro fuso alla fiamma intorno a un bastoncino di metallo), perle da “canna” (taglio e molatura di canne di vetro forate), infilatura di minuscole perline di vetro (dette conterie), realizzazione in fornace di canne di vetro. Ampio spazio è stato dato agli aspetti comuni del lavoro dei detentori, la condivisione del saper-fare e il dinamismo che accomuna detentori italiani e francesi.
L’Organo di valutazione internazionale ha molto apprezzato la valorizzazione che, nel dossier, è stata data agli aspetti immateriali come: il linguaggio specifico (tratto spesso dalla cucina e dal cucito), le memorie, i gesti, gli strumenti, i luoghi dedicati (ad esempio Calle delle Conterie), il forte senso di appartenenza, l’inclusività, i valori culturali comuni a tutta la società civile italiana e francese, le innovazioni, l’attenzione per il riutilizzo dei materiali, un modo per stimolare la creatività e contribuire allo sviluppo durevole. L’ iscrizione auspica di sensibilizzare sempre più sull’importanza di questo patrimonio culturale, sulla necessità di salvaguardarlo intensificando e allargando le occasioni di trasmissione e scambio.
Il progetto di candidatura, promosso dalle due comunità, è iniziato nel 2013 attraverso riunioni e incontri e, nell’ottobre del 2017, è stata presentata ufficialmente alla Commissione UNESCO – Roma una domanda formale di candidatura. Da quel momento sono iniziati i lavori di redazione del dossier ad opera di un comitato di pilotaggio internazionale composto, per la parte italiana, da: Eliana Argine, Claudia Cottica, Maria Teresa Sega, Luisa Conventi, Cristina Bedin, Cristina Sfriso, Muriel Balensi, Marisa Convento. I lavori hanno avuto il fondamentale coordinamento tecnico scientifico dei Ministeri per la cultura, nello specifico del Servizio II – Ufficio UNESCO del MiBAC (Dott.ssa Maria Assunta Peci, Dott.ssa Elena Sinibaldi). L’intero percorso è stato appoggiato dal Comune di Venezia (Dott.ssa Ermelinda Damiano, Dott.ssa Katia Basili) e dalla Regione del Veneto.
Per la città di Venezia si tratta della prima iscrizione di un elemento immateriale nella Lista UNESCO.
“E’ motivo di grande orgoglio, alla vigilia delle celebrazioni per i 1600 anni dalla fondazione di Venezia, poter vedere per una delle eccellenze della nostra tradizione un riconoscimento così prestigioso e significativo. Un percorso iniziato da parecchi anni e che oggi, grazie alla tenacia e al lavoro di tantissime persone, raggiunge l’obiettivo dimostrando non solo la valenza di questa arte preziosa, ma la grande professionalità e manualità degli artisti perlieri. Venezia e la sua Laguna è un sito riconosciuto come patrimonio mondiale UNESCO e ora affidano questa nobile arte alla salvaguardia dell’umanità intera. – ha commentato Luigi Brugnaro, Sindaco della Città di Venezia- . Attraverso le perle, la loro infinita bellezza legata indissolubilmente alla loro estrema fragilità, proprio come la nostra città, vogliamo ricordare al mondo intero che abbiamo il dovere di tutelare il frutto dell’ingegno e della creatività dell’uomo. Solo in questo modo potremo consegnare queste nobili arti alle future generazioni. Ancora un sincero ringraziamento al Comitato e a quanti hanno lavorato per arrivare a questo risultato nella speranza che lo stesso riconoscimento possa arrivare a breve anche per il Merletto di Burano e Pellestrina che hanno già intrapreso lo stesso percorso. Per Venezia e per tutti coloro che amano il vetro, oggi è un giorno di festa e la Città troverà sicuramente occasione per dare lustro a questa eccellenza.”
“Questo riconoscimento è un omaggio al saper fare degli artigiani veneziani, che nei secoli hanno saputo distinguersi per abilità ed esperienza in questo tipo di lavorazioni, tramandando ininterrottamente le loro conoscenze da una generazione all’altra, per più di settecento anni. – ha aggiunto Cristiano Corazzari, Assessore alla Cultura della Regione del Veneto – Il rischio oggi è che questo saper fare, sentito dai cittadini come un forte valore culturale identitario, vada perdendosi, anche a causa dell’abbandono degli antichi mestieri da parte dei giovani. La speranza è che questo riconoscimento aiuti a mantenere viva una delle attività storiche della città, e con essa un tassello della sua cultura”.

“Il riconoscimento dell’arte delle perle di vetro come patrimonio culturale immateriale dell’Umanità è un’ottima notizia che arriva in un momento particolarmente difficile per l’artigianato veneziano e per le sue attività. Le attività delle fornaci e degli artigiani del vetro sono state duramente colpite dagli effetti della crisi sanitaria, molte sono sul lastrico per il crollo del turismo ma anche per le chiusure dei mercati e delle fiere internazionali. L’augurio è che questo riconoscimento diventi un volano per la ripartenza. La Regione del Veneto del resto da anni è impegnata nella tutela dei saperi artigianali e del patrimonio culturale legati all’arte delle perle di vetro” ha detto Luca Zaia, Presidente della Regione del Veneto.

The XV session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, convened today online, has officially included the Art of glass beads in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The nomination has been submitted by Italy and France, with Italy as project leader, and proposed – for the Italian part – by the Community of Venetian beadmakers represented by the Committee for the Safeguarding of the Art of Venetian glass beads and – for the French part – by the Community of French beadmakers, represented by the Association des Perliers d’art de France.
During the entire process, the works have been coordinated by the Ministries for Culture of the respective Countries. For the city of Venice this is the first inscription of an intangible heritage in the UNESCO List.
The art of glass beads is closely linked to the wealth of knowledge and mastery of a material – glass – and an element – fire. This art combines shared knowledge and rooted techniques, uses particular artisanal procedures and tools and includes different working phases. The nomination focuses on know-how, on the social and cultural implications of this art and not only on the made object.
The nomination format has been prepared with the constant participation of the communities of beadmakers, outlining the different techniques: perle a lume (lampwork glass beads, with molten glass being wound around a metal mandrel), perle da canna (glass tube beads, with glass tubes being cut and ground), weaving of minuscule glass beads (so-called conterie), furnace melting of glass tubes.
The common aspects of the work of the holders have been highlighted – the sharing of know-how and dynamism that are common to the Italian and French holders.
The international assessment body has greatly appreciated the fact that the nomination format has emphasized the following intangible aspects of glass beadmaking: the specific language (often taken from cooking and sewing), the memories, the gestures, the tools, the dedicated places (for example Calle delle Conterie), the strong sense of belonging, the inclusivity, the common cultural values encompassing the Italian and French civil society, the innovations, the attention for recycled materials, a way to tickle creativity and contribute to a long-lasting development. The inscription’s intention is to raise awareness on the importance of this cultural heritage, on the need to safeguard it by intensifying and increasing the chances of transmission and exchange.
The nomination project has been initiated by the two communities in 2013 through meetings and debates and, in October 2017, a formal nomination application was officially submitted to the UNESCO Commission in Rome. Since then, the works have started to prepare the nomination format with an international steering committee, consisting of Eliana Argine, Claudia Cottica, Maria Teresa Sega, Luisa Conventi, Cristina Bedin, Cristina Sfriso, Muriel Balensi, Marisa Convento, for Italy. The works have been developed under the scientific and technical coordination of the respective Ministries for Culture, specifically Service II – UNESCO Office of MiBACT, the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism (Dott.ssa Maria Assunta Peci, Dott.ssa Elena Sinibaldi). The nomination process has been supported by the City of Venice (Dott.ssa Ermelinda Damiano, Dott.ssa Katia Basili) and the Veneto Region.
“The recognition of the art of glass beads as intangible cultural heritage of humanity is an excellent piece of news which comes at an especially challenging time for Venetian craftsmanship and its activities. The activities of the furnaces and of the glass artisans have been heavily hit by the effects of the healthcare crisis, many are financially broke due to the collapse of tourism but also for the closures of international markets and trade fairs. Hopefully this recognition will become a driver for recovery. The Veneto Region after all has been engaged for years in the protection of the artisanal know how and cultural heritage related to the art of glass beads”.
